Irises have broad, sharp foliage all throughout the growing season. In late spring, the blue flag iris displays complex blue-purple flowers with yellow accents.
Irises are used as a medicinal herbal. They are “deeply detoxifying and has a strongly stimulating action on the liver, gallbladder, and kidneys” (Northeast Medicinal Plants, Liz Neves).
These are native strain of iris grown from seed, so they offer genetic diversity and nectar flow for pollinators! Many garden irises are highly bred and have sterile flowers with low nectar flow, so these more wild irises are a welcome addition to any garden looking to provide pollinator support.
Growth Parameters:
Expect 3 to 4 feet tall and about as wide at maturity. A lover of wet areas, but versatile enough to deal with some dryness. Likes rich soil but will do well even in heavier clay soils.
