Sochan is a really cool plant because it is tall, and has really pretty yellow and green flowers, yet it loves the shade!

Sochan is the native Cherokee name for this plant, which I like a lot better than greencut coneleaf flower. Excuse me, the correct name is cutcone leafgreen flower… or something like that. Check out this short article for a little history on traditional harvesting https://www.nps.gov/grsm/learn/historyculture/sochan-gathering-a-cherokee-tradition.htm

Sochan provides abundant edible early spring greens! Because of its spreading nature, it is pretty easy to collect in meal sized quantities. It is a mild green overall, but with its own distinct quality.

For more information about edibility and harvesting, check out Incredible Wild Edibles by Sam Thayer.

Growth Parameters:

Expect tall herbaceous perennial flowers up to 7 feet.

If sochan is happy, it will really start to spread and fill the area around it. It’s best to plant this in a more wild context with plenty of competition to keep sochan in check.

Can do well in full sun all the way to part or even full shade! Versatile!
